MetLife Stadium, New Jersey — Ecuador staged a sensational comeback to beat Germany 2-1 and snatch a place in the World Cup Round of 32, after Leroy Sane had given the already-qualified Germans a lead inside two minutes.
The 120-Second Shock
Germany needed barely two minutes to assert their authority. Florian Wirtz, sharp and inventive from a quick throw-in, laid the ball across for Leroy Sane. The Bayern Munich winger struck left-footed from just inside the area — 1-0. Ecuador’s tournament, already hanging by a thread after two scoreless matches, looked over before it had begun.
The 40th Shot
Ecuador had taken 39 attempts at goal across their first two matches without scoring. The 40th changed everything.
In the ninth minute, Pedro Vite intercepted a loose pass in midfield. The ball fell to Nilson Angulo, who took a touch, set himself, and unleashed a ferocious strike from the edge of the box. The ball flew past Manuel Neuer — who was slow to react — and into the bottom right corner. 1-1.

Germany’s Warning Signs
Germany topped Group E on goal difference despite the defeat, but Julian Nagelsmann will have concerns. His side have now conceded in all three group matches. Ecuador’s four points were enough to secure progression as one of the best third-placed teams. Ivory Coast joined Germany in the automatic qualification spots after beating Curacao 2-0. Curacao bowed out with one point.
